Big Gun Exhaust Systems

TECH TIP

Big Gun exhaust systems have always been known, as the biggest and best Gil had to offer. So the question arises what makes the Big Gun better than other systems, and is it the right system for your boat?

Let us start out by saying that the Big Gun system is not the best system for every application. (Bigger is not always better) we only recommend it on engines over 540 cubic inches. Engines with smaller displacements would not benefit from the increased volume the Big Guns provide. The engines that benefit the most from increased volume are engines with large displacement, big camshafts, and that are naturally aspirated. Smaller engines or engines with super chargers do not respond with as much improvement. This is not to say that they will not improve; however the improvement will not be as substantial.

The difference between the Big Gun and our standard offshore exhaust systems may not seem very big at first glance. There is however some significant differences. To start with, the Big Gun uses a 4.5" diameter tailpipe and the offshore is 4". The Big Gun tailpipe is generally longer to help improve performance and protect the engine from ingesting water. The manifold has the head side reworked to allow for better flow. The ports have been opened up and the bowls are blended. The collector area of the Big Gun is larger to accomodate the bigger tailpipe.

If you are shopping for exhaust for your ultra high performance marine engine you owe it to yourself to check out the Gil Big Gun.
